14th Insurance Industry Think Tank Convened to Address Challenges in Supplementary Health Insurance
On June 10, 2025 , the 14th session of the Insurance Industry Think Tank, themed “Challenges of Supplementary Health Insurance”, was held both virtually and in-person on Monday, 19 Khordad 1404 (June 10, 2025), via the Insurance Research Center’s Learning Management System (LMS).
The session featured presentations from prominent figures in the insurance and healthcare sectors, including Dr. Nasrin Hezar-Moghadam (Faculty Member at the Insurance Research Center and Head of the Specialized Health Desk), Dr. Hassan Yavari (Director of Personal Insurance at Iran Insurance Company), Dr. Vahid Nobahar (Insurance Industry Researcher and Member of the Specialized Health Desk), Reza Khoubani (Director of Health Insurance at Dana Insurance), and Jamil Sayyedi Moradi (Director of Health Insurance at Saman Insurance).
According to the Insurance Research Center’s Public Relations and International Affairs Office, the session drew significant attention from experts, managers, and stakeholders across the industry, with more than 700 participants attending both in-person and online.
The discussion focused on analyzing the causes behind the high loss ratio in supplementary health insurance and explored practical solutions for its mitigation.
Key topics addressed included:
Inadequate access to insured medical data and lack of transparency in costs and services;
Weaknesses in information systems and the urgent need to develop smart technologies within the insurance sector;
Insufficient oversight of diagnostic centers and healthcare service providers;
Discrepancies in the pricing of medical services and challenges related to tariff structures;
Out-of-pocket expenses for policyholders; and
Lack of integrated data-sharing mechanisms between insurers and medical institutions.
Speakers also presented statistical comparisons of supplementary health insurance loss ratios in Iran and internationally, highlighting the need for enhanced data analytics, stronger regulatory frameworks, and process reforms.
The session concluded with a set of forward-looking recommendations, including:
Digitalization of insurance processes;
Development of intelligent insurance systems;
Establishment of a centralized health and treatment data platform;
Accurate actuarial practices;
Revision of existing insurance regulations; and
Promotion of preventive healthcare measures.
This forum represents a continued commitment by the Insurance Research Center and industry leaders to foster policy innovation and sustainable development within Iran’s evolving health insurance landscape.
