According to the Public Relations and International Affairs Office of the IRC, the International Affairs Working Group, in collaboration with the Climate Change Desk of the IRC, organized the expert session “Introduction to the Process of Preparing Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Reports and the Latest Status of the Seventh IPCC Assessment Report” online with the participation of a group of insurance professionals and industry stakeholders.

During the session, the process of preparing IPCC reports, their scientific structure, and the review and approval procedures were explained, with emphasis placed on the importance of countries’ and specialized institutions’ participation in producing and utilizing global knowledge related to climate change.

The speakers also reviewed the stages involved in preparing the Seventh IPCC Assessment Report, outlined its latest status, and examined its role in decision-making by governments, economic institutions, and various industries, including the insurance sector.

The discussion further highlighted the rising frequency and severity of climate-related hazards and stressed the need for the insurance industry to shift its approach from loss compensation to risk management and prevention. The session underscored the use of scientific data, the development of advanced risk assessment models, and the application of IPCC reports as key prerequisites for enhancing the resilience of the insurance industry against climate hazards.

Another major theme of the session was the need to strengthen interaction among the scientific community, policymaking institutions, and the insurance industry in order to develop evidence-based solutions. It was also emphasized that Iranian experts should play a more active role in international scientific processes and that IPCC findings should be used in formulating the policies, products, and strategies of the country’s insurance industry.

In conclusion, the speakers examined emerging insurance paradigms in the context of climate change and stressed the role of research, innovation, and international cooperation in increasing the insurance industry’s readiness to manage climate-induced risks and support sustainable development.
