Toward a Framework for Professional Ethics in the Insurance Industry: Lessons from Global Experience
The Insurance Research Center (IRC) has published a new research report titled “Identification, Analysis, and Localization of Professional Ethics Principles in the Insurance Industry with Emphasis on the Experiences of Selected Countries,” presenting a proposed framework for the development of professional ethics principles tailored to the structure and operational needs of Iran’s insurance sector.
According to the Public Relations and International Affairs Office of IRC, the study aims to conceptualize and localize professional ethics within the insurance industry. It underscores that reliance solely on regulatory provisions and formal supervisory mechanisms is insufficient to safeguard policyholders’ rights and strengthen public trust. In this context, establishing a clear and broadly endorsed framework for professional ethics is regarded as an essential component of effective governance and sustainable development in the insurance industry.
Employing a descriptive–analytical approach alongside comparative analysis, the study examines and evaluates professional ethics documents and principles adopted in the insurance markets of selected countries. These findings are subsequently assessed in light of Iran’s institutional, cultural, and professional context to determine the feasibility of adapting and localizing such principles for the national insurance sector. The results indicate that professional ethics frameworks are most effective when they both align with international standards and reflect the specific domestic characteristics and institutional requirements of each country.
The principal outcome of the research is the presentation of a proposed framework outlining the foundational principles of professional ethics, along with the institutional prerequisites for their implementation within Iran’s insurance industry. This framework has served as the basis for drafting a proposed “Comprehensive Code of Professional Ethics in the Insurance Industry,” which may facilitate dialogue, expert deliberation, and consensus-building among stakeholders toward the development and adoption of a comprehensive, locally grounded ethical framework for the country’s insurance sector.
